How to convert M4A to MP3
- Add your M4A files. Drag them onto the box above or click to browse. You can add several at once.
- Pick a quality. 192 kbps suits most uses; choose 320 kbps for the best quality or 128 kbps for smaller files.
- Download. Each MP3 gets its own download button as soon as it’s ready.
What is M4A?
M4A is Apple’s audio container, usually holding AAC audio. You’ll find it in iPhone Voice Memos, GarageBand exports, iTunes purchases and many podcast downloads. It sounds great, but some Windows programs, Android apps, websites and older devices only accept MP3.
Tips
- Voice memos are speech, so 128 kbps keeps them clear while staying small.
- Songs bought from iTunes before 2009 may be copy-protected (M4P) and can’t be converted.
- On iPhone, share a voice memo to Files first, then pick it from this page in Safari.
M4A to MP3: questions
Can I convert iPhone voice memos to MP3?
Yes. Save the memo to the Files app, open this page in Safari, tap the box above and choose the file.
Is M4A the same as AAC?
Almost. M4A is the file container; the audio inside is usually AAC (or sometimes Apple Lossless). Both convert to MP3 the same way.
Why won’t my M4P file convert?
M4P files are protected by Apple’s FairPlay DRM, which prevents conversion. Only unprotected M4A files can be converted.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Anything to MP3 converts M4A to MP3 inside your browser, so your files never leave your device.
